For 49 years, the Brazilian Academy of Management (ANPAD) has played a central role in advancing research and graduate education in Brazil. Founded in 1976 in Rio de Janeiro during a crucial time for the establishment of graduate programs, ANPAD was created to promote excellence in teaching, research, and knowledge production in the fields of Administration, Accounting, and related disciplines.
The First Steps
ANPAD’s journey began with three initial meetings that culminated in the approval of its bylaws and the official founding of what was then called the National Association of Graduate Programs in Administration on December 21, 1976. The following year, on March 30, 1977, the first Extraordinary Assembly of ANPAD convened, hosting discussions that would shape the organization’s future, including the creation of the ANPAD’s Proficiency Test and the proposal for organizing the inaugural ANPAD Annual Meeting (EnANPAD).
Scientific Events and Publications
Since its inaugural edition in 1977, the ANPAD Annual Meeting (EnANPAD) has become one of the largest academic conferences in the field in Brazil, bringing together researchers, professors, and students to discuss advancements and challenges in Administration. Over the years, the event has hosted more than 40,000 participants. Currently, it attracts over 3,500 people annually – including authors, reviewers, panelists, and attendees – who contribute to the success of the meeting. In addition to EnANPAD, ANPAD organizes nine other thematic events every three years, each coordinated by a specific Academic Division:
EnEO – ANPAD Organizational Studies Conference (EOR – Organizational Studies)
3Es – ANPAD Strategic Management Conference (ESO – Strategy)
EnAPG – ANPAD Public Administration Conference (APB – Public Administration)
EMA – ANPAD Marketing Conference (MKT – Marketing)
SITE – Symposium of Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship (ITE – Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship)
EnATI – ANPAD Management Information Systems Conference (ATI – Management Information Systems)
EnEDP – ANPAD Conference on Management and Accounting Education and Research (EDP – Management and Accounting Education and Research)
EnGPR – ANPAD Conference on Human Resources Management and Labor Relations (GPR – Human Resources and Labor Relations)
SIMPOI – Symposium of Production Management, Logistics, and International Operations (GOL – Operations Management and Logistics)
ANPAD also plays a key role in the production and dissemination of academic knowledge. In 1997, it launched RAC – Revista de Administração Contemporânea (Journal of Contemporary Administration), one of Brazil’s leading scientific journals, which is committed to open science. The journal aims to foster debate, support the development of public policies, and encourage new management practices aligned with contemporary social challenges.
In 2004, ANPAD created BAR – Brazilian Administration Review, an academic journal with international reach that promotes research in management and organizational theory, offering valuable insights for both businesses and public administration through the global dissemination of conceptual and empirical studies.
Complementing this ecosystem is SPELL – Scientific Periodicals Electronic Library, officially launched in 2012 to meet the demand for a specialized platform for indexing, searching, and freely distributing scientific production in the fields of Public and Business Administration, Accounting, and Tourism. Since 2016, the Journal Impact Indicators calculated by this electronic library have been used in the evaluation by the Brazilian Agency CAPES (CAPES/Qualis evaluation), reinforcing SPELL’s academic significance.
The Impact of the ANPAD’s Proficiency Test on Graduate Studies
A major milestone for ANPAD was the creation of ANPAD’s Proficiency Test in 1987 – a standardized exam designed for the admission process of graduate programs in Administration, Accounting, and related fields. Today, more than 150 academic graduate programs across Brazil recognize and use the test. It evaluates candidates’ proficiency in addressing linguistic and interpretative problems in both Portuguese and English, as well as logical-mathematical and analytical-argumentative reasoning. The test has established itself as a benchmark for admission to numerous high-quality programs in these disciplines.
Commitment to Research and Academic Training
Currently, ANPAD brings together more than 100 graduate programs and over 2,000 members from across the country, fostering collaboration among researchers, professors, and students. Its commitment to the quality of teaching and research is grounded in four core values: integration, innovation, integrity, and inclusion. These principles have helped establish ANPAD as a leading reference in the academic field.
It is essential to recognize and thank the founders and pioneers of ANPAD, who initiated this journey and taught us the value of consistently striving for excellence and unity. Celebrating ANPAD’s 49th birthday means acknowledging its significant contributions to the advancement of science and academic training in Brazil. We remain committed to our mission of advancing research, promoting outstanding teaching, and continually strengthening our presence in the academic community. Here’s to many more years of progress and achievement.
