Learn about “Inclusive ANPAD”: Promoting equity and opportunities in graduate studies

January – March 2025 Edition | Volume 5, Issue 1

Since 2021, ANPAD has supported 1,093 students through its exemption initiatives, broadening access to academic opportunities and fostering a more diverse and inclusive academic environment. This affirmative action policy aims to increase the participation of historically underrepresented groups in higher education and reinforces ANPAD’s ongoing commitment to equity in graduate studies.

Dedicated to the academic and scientific advancement of Brazil, ANPAD strengthens its inclusion agenda through the initiative “inclusive ANPAD” (ANPAD Inclusiva). This program seeks to expand access to graduate education for historically marginalized social groups, acknowledging that inequality of opportunity remains a structural challenge in higher education and scientific careers.

This need becomes clear when analyzing data on representation in Brazilian graduate programs. According to the Report of the Working Group on Equity and Reduction of Asymmetries in Graduate Studies, published by the Brazilian agency CAPES in December 2024, despite references to equity in documents and evaluation forms, current initiatives remain insufficient to shift the landscape of inequality. The report highlights that the composition of graduate education in Brazil does not reflect the country’s demographic diversity, demonstrating the urgent need for effective inclusion policies.

In response to this reality, ANPAD has taken concrete steps through the “Inclusive ANPAD” initiative to address structural barriers and promote more equitable access to graduate studies in administration and related fields. Among the key actions are fee exemptions for participation in ANPAD-organized events and the ANPAD Proficiency Test.

For events, registration fee exemptions are granted to individuals who, based on pre-established criteria, demonstrate insufficient socioeconomic resources and identify as members of historically marginalized ethno-racial groups, such as Black and Pardo populations, Indigenous peoples, and Quilombola communities. In 2024, a total of 56 exemptions were granted for event participation.

For the ANPAD Proficiency Test, fee exemptions are offered to students who can demonstrate a history of limited socioeconomic resources throughout their educational trajectory. In 2024, 290 exemptions were granted for the test.

Building a more diverse and representative graduate education system requires collective and ongoing effort. ANPAD remains firmly committed to this agenda and invites the entire academic community to engage with and contribute to “Inclusive ANPAD,” helping to reshape the future of higher education in Brazil.
