The Science20 (S20) Brazil 2024 engagement group, which brings together the Science Academies of G20 member countries, has released its Official Communication. The document, which presents key recommendations for social, economic, and sustainable development, is aligned with the 2030 Agenda and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The communication was handed over to Ambassador Maurício Lyrio, the G20 sherpa for Brazil, and Ambassador Tatiana Rosito, coordinator of the G20 Finance Track for 2024. The recommendations in the document will be discussed during Brazil’s G20 presidency and may eventually be forwarded to the Heads of State and Government of the group, who will meet in November.
The S20, established in 2017, aims to promote dialogue between the Science Academies of G20 countries, focusing on science and technology topics. In 2024, the meeting took place in Rio de Janeiro under the theme “Science for Global Transformation.” Key topics discussed included Artificial Intelligence, Bioeconomy, Energy Transition Process, Health Challenges, and Social Justice, all related to the UN’s 2030 Agenda.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) was highlighted as a key factor for development in areas such as healthcare, education, and climate change, but with potential risks that require a strong ethical framework. The Bioeconomy, in turn, was presented as a sustainable solution based on renewable biological resources, with an emphasis on natural resource conservation and the inclusion of local and indigenous communities. The communication also addresses the importance of the Energy Transition, stressing the need for a balance between technological innovation, energy security, and social justice, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and increase the use of clean energy.
Regarding health challenges, the S20 emphasized the urgency of a more equitable and sustainable system, focusing on promoting healthy lifestyles and combating climate change and pollution, which directly affect human health. Finally, Social Justice was addressed as an essential issue, with science seen as a crucial tool for reducing inequalities and promoting inclusion.
After more than six months of work and collaboration among S20 members, the communication reflects the commitment of the Science Academies to contribute to G20 decisions and help build a more sustainable and inclusive future.
