SPELL – the Scientific Periodicals Electronic Library – is a platform created by the Brazilian Academy of Management (ANPAD) in 2012 to organize, index, and provide free access to scientific production in the fields of Public and Business Administration, Accounting, and Tourism. Developed to consolidate and facilitate access to scientific articles, technological articles, editorials, interviews, reviews, case studies, and abstracts of theses and dissertations, SPELL functions as a repository that centralizes information from national journals, promoting visibility and democratizing access to scientific knowledge produced in Brazil.
The platform enables researchers, professors, students, and professionals to perform simple or advanced searches using criteria such as title, author, keywords, journal, abstract, publication period, document type, field of knowledge, and language. With features that allow users to combine different filters, they can precisely locate papers, download documents in PDF format, organize temporary collections in “My Folder,” and share content via email – expanding the dissemination of scientific information.
In addition to its search functionality, SPELL provides detailed information about indexed journals, including editorial history, issue coverage, peer review policy, editorial board, and annually calculated impact indicators. Since 2016, these indicators have been used in the Qualis/CAPES classification of journals in the relevant fields, reinforcing their role in strengthening the quality of Brazilian scientific production.
The inclusion of journals in SPELL follows rigorous criteria, such as ISSN registration, compliance with ANPAD’s standards of good practice, regular publication, peer review, editorial transparency, and the quality of scientific content. Selection also considers academic relevance, Qualis ranking, or international indexing, as well as the journal’s nature and thematic scope, ensuring a reliable and high-quality collection.
