In 2025, the field of Administration in Brazil celebrates 60 years since the profession was regulated. This milestone was established with the enactment of Law No. 4,769 of September 9, 1965, which created the legal basis for the first undergraduate programs in Administration in the country. Since then, the field has served as a bridge between theory and practice, with a strong academic presence, growing social impact, and increasing professional recognition.
Over the past six decades, the teaching and research of Administration have undergone significant transformations, evolving alongside Brazil’s economic cycles, political shifts, and social challenges. While the early decades focused on training managers to meet the demands of the industrial sector and the modernization of the state, more recent years have seen an expansion into themes such as sustainability, innovation, diversity, governance, and social responsibility.
A decisive factor in this trajectory has been the consolidation of a scientific community dedicated to advancing knowledge in Administration. The creation of graduate programs, research centers, and academic conferences has elevated the standards of scientific production and fostered collaboration among researchers across different regions of the country.
Only ten years after the regulation of the profession, the Brazilian Academy of Management (ANPAD) was founded. Established in 1976, the Association will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2026. ANPAD has played a central role in strengthening the academic field. As a network connecting graduate programs, researchers, and institutions in Brazil and abroad, it is best known for its scientific meetings – most notably EnANPAD – and for its nationally and internationally recognized journals. These spaces have become benchmarks for critical debate, academic exchange, and the collective development of research agendas that address the contemporary challenges of Administration. This historical proximity demonstrates that ANPAD has been part of the field’s trajectory almost from the beginning, contributing decisively to its scientific development and academic collaboration.
This year, the field celebrates not only its own evolution but also the professionals, faculty, students, and organizations that have contributed to strengthening the science and practice of management in diverse contexts. This milestone has been incorporated as a central theme in events and initiatives designed to honor the field’s history and project its future.
The system of professional organizations—the Federal and Regional Councils of Administration (CFA/CRAs System)—has organized a comprehensive Diamond Jubilee celebration featuring events, tributes, debates, and institutional initiatives across all regions of the country. Today, rapid technological change, ethical dilemmas in organizations, climate urgency, and structural inequalities place Administration in a strategic position. The training of conscientious managers and the production of critical knowledge are essential to address these complex and uncertain scenarios.
Thus, celebrating 60 years of Administration in Brazil is more than just marking a historic date: it is an opportunity to reflect on the field’s role in transforming society. Commitment to research quality, theoretical and methodological plurality, and social impact must continue to guide its future cycles.
