Founded in 1997 by the Brazilian Academy of Management (ANPAD), the Journal of Contemporary Administration (RAC) has over twenty years of contributions to scientific research in administration in Brazil, closely following and responding to changes in the graduate system and debates that have shaped the field during this time.
Conceived by Professor Clóvis Machado da Silva, RAC was designed as a journal not affiliated with any specific institution, open to a plurality of approaches and diverse academic backgrounds. From its inception, the term “contemporânea” (contemporary) has not been limited to a temporal reference; rather, it reflects the intention to engage with present-day challenges and their economic, social, political, and environmental implications. This commitment has guided the development of a body of work that brings together research from diverse theoretical, methodological, and epistemological orientations, connecting regional contexts to global dynamics – thereby consolidating the journal as a reference platform for researchers, graduate programs, and institutions in the field of management.
RAC’s inclusion in leading national and international databases and directories reflects its recognition beyond the Brazilian context. The journal is indexed in Scopus and SciELO and is available on platforms such as Redalyc, ProQuest, EBSCO, ERIH Plus, DOAJ, and Google Scholar, among other indexing services and directories. It is classified as A2 by Qualis/Capes – the second-highest classification in the system and a benchmark for graduate programs nationwide – as well as by the ABS Academic Journal Guide and Carhus Plus+. In the SPELL ranking, it consistently ranks among the most-accessed journals in the field of administration.
The journal does not charge submission or publication fees, ensuring full open access to all its content. With the goal of being indexed in the Web of Science ESCI, RAC shows a continuous effort to expand its presence within the international scientific community.
RAC welcomes submissions that engage with multiple research traditions and cover topics of economic, social, political, and environmental relevance related to organizations and society. Its editorial scope includes, but is not limited to, governance, sustainability, diversity, responsibility, organizational strategy, public management, technology, and management education. This scope is not just declarative: throughout its history, the journal has mobilized its community around emerging agendas through special thematic issues, many of which align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Topics covered include sustainable and resilient business models, the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on organizations, corporate governance in family firms, qualitative methods in management research, and technological perspectives applied to regional contexts.
RAC publishes various types of manuscripts, including empirical-theoretical articles, theoretical essays, studies, methodological papers, provocations, executive letters, technological articles, and teaching cases, thereby expanding opportunities for dialogue between research and practice. This diversity of formats reflects an editorial approach that values both methodological rigor and relevance beyond disciplinary boundaries. In alignment with Open Science practices, the journal promotes the sharing of data, materials, and code, as well as transparency regarding the editorial process. A member of COPE – the Committee on Publication Ethics – since 2020, RAC adheres to its principles and makes datasets and materials available on its Harvard Dataverse page.
Since 2021, adopting the Early Access model has enabled articles that have already undergone peer review, editing, and DOI assignment to be published online before being officially included in a volume and issue. This makes articles immediately accessible and citable, shortening the time from acceptance to public release. The Early Access approach aligns with standard practices in international journals and emphasizes RAC’s dedication to the prompt dissemination of scientific knowledge.
Over three decades of its trajectory, RAC has established itself as one of the leading scientific journals in the field of administration in Brazil. With an editorial board (https://rac.anpad.org.br/index.php/rac/about/editorialTeam) composed of researchers from Brazilian and international institutions, the journal operates as a bridge between the national academic community and global scientific debates.
