Central Theme – ANPAD’s 50th Anniversary: Rethinking, reinventing, and reimagining the management, accounting, and related sciences — A manifesto for the next 50 years of management research in Brazil

Celebrating this milestone is not merely about commemorating a successful trajectory. It is about collectively taking responsibility for deciding what kind of science we want to produce going forward. EnANPAD 2026 marks a turning point: a moment for critical reflection, the confrontation of ideas, and the reinvention of the agendas that guide research in management, accounting, and related fields in Brazil.

Over five decades, ANPAD has played a decisive role in consolidating stricto sensu graduate education, training researchers, and building the country’s largest and most prominent academic space in the field. EnANPAD has been – and remains – the place where theories were introduced, methods were contested, traditions were established, and, at times, challenged. This history is neither linear nor consensual. It comprises debates, tensions, and choices that have shaped the field as we know it today.

However, the present requires more than a look back at the past. We are living through a moment when management research faces multiple crises: social, environmental, institutional, and epistemological. The pressure for impact, relevance, and social responsibility coexists with rigid evaluation systems, standardized metrics, and incentives that do not always favor innovation, pluralism, or intellectual risk-taking. In light of this, it is inevitable to ask: which problems are we prioritizing? Which forms of knowledge are we legitimizing? Which futures are we helping to develop?

EnANPAD 2026 is committed to placing these questions at the center of the debate. This is not simply about following trends, but about contesting agendas: rethinking theories that no longer capture contemporary complexity; reinventing methods for investigating organizational, social, and managerial phenomena in contexts marked by inequality, digital transformation, and climate crises; and reimagining the role of management research as a scientific, formative, and socially engaged practice.

This manifesto calls on the ANPAD community, senior researchers, early-career faculty, and master’s and doctoral students to treat EnANPAD not only as a meeting place but also as a space for provocation. A space that values theoretical plurality, methodological rigor, and intellectual experimentation. A space that encourages dialogue among qualitative, quantitative, experimental, computational, and critical approaches and recognizes the field’s strength in the diversity of its perspectives and its capacity to sustain substantive debate.

More than an academic event, EnANPAD 2026 will be a moment of gathering, celebration, and collective affirmation. A space to honor career paths, renew commitments, and strengthen bonds among senior researchers, early-career faculty, and graduate students. A space for community, friendship, listening, and joint construction, because science is also built through the relationships we cultivate over time.

As ANPAD celebrates its 50th anniversary, it reaffirms its role as the central reference point for management research in Brazil and invites its community to imagine and build the next chapters of this history. The future of the field is not predetermined. It will be shaped by the choices we make now about what to research, how to research it, and with whom.
