ANPAD’s Divisional Conferences 2023 – Highlights & Awards

ANPAD held three divisional events in May: the 10th Strategic Management Conference (3Es), the 8th Conference on Human Resources Management and Industrial Relations (EnGPR), and the 8th Management Information Systems Conference (EnADI). These events encourage the development of studies in the three academic divisions, considering the different subsystems and dimensions of analysis and the highlighted Topics of Interest. All events hosted theoretical-empirical articles, theoretical essays, and technological articles. 

The 2023 Divisional Events took place on May 16, 17, and 18, 2023, in São Paulo, Brazil, at the facilities of the marketing school ESPM. They were the first ANPAD divisional conferences since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic to occur in person and counted the participation of Brazilian and international researchers.  

The 10th Strategic Management Conference (3Es) took place under the responsibility of the Academic Division of Strategy (ESO). The division proposed five activities, and 42 paper presentation sessions were held. The event counted 183 participants, and 147 studies were presented. 

The keynote speakers were Sergio G. Lazzarini and Katharina Dittrich. Professor Lazzarini is a professor at the Ivey Business School at Western University (Canada) and a full professor of the Chafi Haddad chair at Insper. He researches the strategy and governance of public interest activities, which are carried out by various actors, such as public organizations, impact-driven companies, and public-private collaborations. Professor Katharina Dittrich is an associate professor of organizational studies in the Organization and Human Resource Management (OHRM) research group at the Warwick Business School at the University of Warwick, UK. She holds a PhD from the University of Zurich, Switzerland, focusing on Organizational Theory. She was a visiting researcher at the Said Business School in Oxford, UK, and the University of California at Irvine, USA. Her research interests include climate change, organizational change, organizational routines/dynamic routines, and strategy, emphasizing theoretical approaches to social practice and qualitative research methods. 

Six award categories were presented, with three studies competing in the “best work” categories. The awardees were: 

  • Best work of the division: “Ownership competence in weak institutional environments: the case of private equity investments in entrepreneurial firms,” by Guilherme Fowler de Avila Monteiro (Professional Master’s Program in Administration/Instituto de Ensino e Pesquisa – Insper), Bruno Varella Miranda, and Andrea Maria Accioly Fonseca Minardi (Professional Master’s Program in Administration / Institute of Education and Research – Insper). 
  • Best work resulting from a doctoral dissertation:O malabarismo entre exploração e explotação: uma revisão sobre a ambidestria organizacional”(Juggling between exploration and exploitation: a review of organizational ambidexterity), by Kallita Ester Magalhães (Graduate Program in Business Administration – PPGA / Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie) and Silvio Popadiuk (Graduate Program in Business Administration – PPGA/Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie). 
  • Best work resulting from a master’s thesis: “Causal beliefs in the rationalization of entrepreneurial strategies,” by Andre Magalhaes Gomes (Graduate and Research Center in Administration – Cepead/Federal University of Minas Gerais – UFMG), Leonardo Augusto de Vasconcelos Gomes (Graduate Program in Administration – PPGA/Faculty of Economics, Administration and Accounting – FEA/University of São Paulo – USP), and Jonathan Simões Freitas (Graduate and Research Center in Administration – Cepead/Federal University of Minas Gerais – UFMG). 
  • Best technological article:Crescimento da operação de uma empresa de serviços em tecnologia de informação: caminhos e percalços na sua implementação” (Growing the operation of an information technology service company: paths and pitfalls in its implementation), by Janaina Maria Bueno (Professional Master in Organizational Management/Federal University of Uberlândia – UFU) and Rodrigo Henrique Sorriente (Professional Master’s Graduate Program in Business Management – PPGGO/Federal University of Uberlândia – UFU). 
  • Best reviewer and featured reviewers: 
  • Best reviewer: Manuel Anibal Silva Portugal Vasconcelos Ferreira (Department of Management and Economics/Polytechnic Institute of Leiria/School of Technology and Management – ESTG; Center of Applied Research in Management and Economics – CARME).

  • Lifetime achievement award: Jorge Ferreira da Silva (Master’s and PhD in Business Administration/PUC-Rio Business School – IAG/Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro – PUC-Rio). 

The 8th Conference on Human Resources Management and Industrial Relations (EnGPR) was held under the responsibility of the academic division of Human Resources and Labor Relations (GPR). The event hosted 38 paper presentation sessions and four activities, counting 143 participants and 136 works presented. 

The main speaker was Professor Lourdes Canós Darós, who has a degree in Business Administration and PhD in Human Resource Management. She is a professor in the Department of Business Management and a member of the ROGLE research group at the Universitat Politècnica de València (Spain). For seven years, she was deputy director of tourism management at the Gandia campus of the Universitat Politècnica de València and deputy head of the secretariat department. Today, she is a member of different management committees. She has articles published in renowned international journals in the field of management. 

Six award categories were presented, with three works competing in the “best work” categories. The awardees were: 

  • Best work of the division:  Capital cultural e ganhos profissionais de egressos cotistas e não cotistas das universidades federais brasileiras (Cultural capital and professional gains of graduates benefited or not by the affirmative action system of quotas in Brazilian federal universitie), by José Roberto Abreu de Carvalho Junior (Graduate Program in Administration – PPGAdm/Federal University of Viçosa – UFV), Wescley Silva Xavier (Graduate Program in Administration – PPGAdm/Federal University of Viçosa – UFV), and Marco Aurélio Marques Ferreira (Graduate Program in Administration – PPGAdm/Federal University of Viçosa – UFV). 
  • Best work resulting from a doctoral dissertation:Juventudes, trabalho e interseccionalidade: estudo com jovens aprendizes” (Youth, work, and intersectionality: a study with beneficiaries of the “young apprentice” program in Brazil) by Jane Kelly Dantas Barbosa (Institute of Production Engineering and Management/Federal University of Itajubá – Unifei; Graduate and Research Center in Administration – Cepead/Federal University of Minas Gerais – UFMG), and Ana Flávia Rezende (Professional Master’s Program in Administration: Contemporary Management of Organizations/Fundação Dom Cabral – FDC). 
  • Best work resulting from a master’s thesis: Desaprendizagem organizacional em organização bancária: uma análise no nível individual” (Organizational unlearning in a banking organization: an analysis at the individual level), by Nubia Aparecida Martins (Graduate Program in Administration – PPGAdm/Faculty of Economic, Administrative and Accounting Sciences – Feac/University of Passo Fundo – UPF) and Anelise Rebelato Mozzato (Graduate Program in Administration – PPGAdm/Faculty of Economic, Administrative and Accounting Sciences – Feac/University of Passo Fundo – UPF). 
  • Best reviewer: Danilo Andretta (Master’s and PhD in Business Administration/São Paulo School of Business Administration – Eaesp/Getulio Vargas Foundation – FGV). 
  • Young Researcher Award: Renato Colomby (Federal Institute of Paraná – IFPR Campus Palmas; Graduate Program in Administration – PPGA/School of Administration – EA/Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul – UFRGS). 
  • Lifetime achievement award:  Antonio Virgílio Bittencourt Bastos (Federal University of Bahia – UFBA). 

The 8th Management Information Systems Conference (EnADI) was held by the academic division of Management Information Systems (ADI). The event hosted four activities proposed by the academic division and 18 paper presentation sessions. The conference had 88 participants registered and 66 studies presented. 

The keynote speaker was Fernando Kleiman, professor at the Delft University of Technology (TUDelft) in the ICT section of the Department of Systems and Services Engineering at the Faculty of Technology Management and Policy. Professor Kleiman has a PhD in Systems and Services Engineering, and his thesis was on the use of games to influence the attitude of public servants toward the provision of open data. He is also a federal public servant in the career Specialist in Public Policy and Government Management at the Ministry of Management and Innovation (Brazilian Federal Government). 

Four categories of best work awards were presented. The awardees were: 

  • Best work of the division:A inteligência como inovação na gestão pública: pressupostos para a institucionalização” (Intelligence as innovation in public management: assumptions for institutionalization), by Claudia Melati (IEA Future Lab – Research Group/Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul – UFRGS) and Raquel Janissek-Muniz (Program of Postgraduate Studies in Administration – PPGA/School of Administration – EA/Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul – UFRGS). 
  • Best work resulting from a doctoral dissertation:Adoção da Internet das Coisas (IoT) na pecuária bovina de corte: uma análise sobre as práticas de Trabalho Institucional inibidoras” (Adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT) in beef cattle farming: an analysis of inhibiting Institutional Work practices), by Eduardo Corneto Silva (Graduate Program in Administration – PPGAD/Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul – UFMS) and Marcia Maria dos Santos Bortolocci Espejo (Graduate Program in Administration – PPGAD/School of Administration and Business – ESAN/Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul – UFMS). 
  • Best work resulting from a master’s thesis:Relação entre o desempenho de governança e o desempenho econômico, social e ambiental de cidades inteligentes” (Relationship between governance performance and the smart cities’ economic, social, and environmental performance), by Danielly Rodrigues da Cruz (Graduate Program in Administration – PPGAd/Center for Applied Social Sciences – CCSA/Regional University of Blumenau – FURB), and Adriana Kroenke (Graduate Program in Administration – PPGAd/Center for Applied Social Sciences – CCSA/Regional University of Blumenau – FURB). 
  • Best technological article:Uso de ferramenta de nudge digital para o processo da cadeia de suprimentos” (Use of a digital nudge tool for the supply chain process), by Ana Maria Roux Valentini Coelho Cesar (Graduate Program in Controllership and Corporate Finance/Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie), Marcio Quadros Lopes dos Santos (Professional Master’s Degree in Management for Competitiveness – MPGC São Paulo School of Business Administration – EAESP/Fundação Getulio Vargas – FGV; PhD in Controllership and Corporate Finance/Mackenzie Presbyterian University), Sérgio Apolinário, Alexandre Nunes Hernandes (Graduate Program in Controllership and Corporate Finance – PPGCFE/ Mackenzie Presbyterian University; Professional Master’s Degree in Management for Competitiveness – MPGC/São Paulo School of Business Administration – EAESP/Fundação Getulio Vargas – FGV) and Evandro Henrique Ferreira Scussel (Graduate Program in Controllership and Corporate Finance – PPGCFE/ Mackenzie Presbyterian University). 

Thanks to the efforts of the organizers and the entire community, we fulfilled the purpose of divisional events and finally returned to hosting events in a face-to-face format. We hope to see you again in September for the ANPAD Annual Meeting EnANPAD 2023.
