The GreenMetric World University Ranking, one of the leading global sustainability rankings in higher education, annually evaluates institutions from various countries based on criteria such as green space preservation, sustainable transportation, waste management, efficient water use, and zoning profile (urban, suburban, or rural). In its 2024 edition, Brazil achieved an unprecedented milestone: the University of São Paulo (USP) was ranked as the fifth most sustainable university in the world, being the only institution in Latin America to feature in the top 5.
In addition to leading the region, USP stood out among globally renowned universities, positioning Brazil as a benchmark for sustainable practices. Other Latin American institutions also achieved notable rankings, such as the Autonomous University of Nuevo León in Mexico (16th position), the University of Rosario in Colombia (30th position), and the Federal University of Lavras in Brazil (35th position). These results highlight the growing commitment of universities in the region to sustainability and positive environmental impact.
The GreenMetric 2024 evaluated 1,477 institutions across 95 countries, solidifying its role as a key indicator of higher education’s contributions to global sustainability. USP’s presence in this ranking is further reinforced by other recent achievements. In the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2025, USP secured the 70th position globally, with strong performance in social and environmental impact criteria.
These achievements reaffirm the role of Brazilian universities in pursuing sustainable and innovative solutions aligned with contemporary global challenges. USP’s inclusion among the world’s top five most sustainable universities reflects Brazil’s commitment to responsible development and the construction of a more balanced and inclusive future.
