Professor Marcelo de Souza Bispo, coordinator of the Management & Accounting Education and Research – EDP at Brazilian Academy of Management – ANPAD, has recently released the book Sociology of Administration: The Moral Conflict in the Face of Major Societal Challenges, published by Editora Appris.
In the work, the professor offers a critical reflection on how Administration engages with major contemporary dilemmas, such as climate change, inequality, poverty, and the construction of peace. Drawing on the Sociology of Morality, the book problematizes the supposed harmonization between the pursuit of profit-oriented efficiency and responsible Administration, guided by sustainability, ethics, and social responsibility.
According to Bispo, genuine transformation requires a revision of the moral foundations underlying administrative practice, replacing the logic of profit maximization with achievable results aligned with broader societal values, such as those expressed in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The book addresses a field that is still little explored in business school curricula: the Sociology of Administration. At the same time, it provides a relevant reading for both academics and managers or entrepreneurs interested in practices that can effectively contribute to a more sustainable, ethical, and equitable world.
